TUESDAY, APRIL 20, 1999 - 11 a.m. - TOBACCO CONTROL BILLBOARDS GO UP - Youth activists unveil one of the new tobacco control billboard sites made available to the R.I. Department of Health by the R.I. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 28, 1999 - 1 p.m. - 2:30 p.m. - FOLLOW THE CHILDREN kickoff At St. Philips School, Greenville, RI.  Releasing the new book by Gary Hopp,for middle school-age students, about young people taking action to reduce their exposure to secondhand smoke, especially in cars.  Call American Lung Assn. of RI for info at 421-6487.

SATURDAY, MAY 1, 1999 - 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. - COMMUNITY HEALTH FAIR - Center for Hispanic Policy and Advocacy. Juanita Sanchez Center, 421 Elmwood Avenue, Providence (corner of Elmwood Avenue and Hawthorn St.)  Hosted by the Promotores de la Salud program. The Promotores are community health workers who disseminate information about health issues pertaining to the community through the medium of "house parties" (informal presentations that take place in the home of firends and peers) and community events.  A fun, family-oriented setting including demonstrations, prizes, music, and food.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 5, 1999 - 7:45 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. - TOBACCO CONTROL: YOUTH SPEAK OUT  2nd Annual conference by youth, for youth.  At Bryant College.  Sponsored by Youth Taking A Stand and the Urban Tobacco Collaborative.  Call 722-9400 for more information or to register.  For the past several years throughout Rhode Island, teens have been working vigorously on tobacco control issues and the promotion of health, non-use behaviors among youth of all ages through funding provided by Project ASSIST.  Now they would like to share their strategies and rsources with other groups interested in or working on tobacco control initiatives.

THURSDAY, MAY 6, 1999 - 4:00 - 6:30 p.m. - MEDIA ADVOCACY - At Warwick City Hall, 3275 Post Road, Warwick, RI.  RI Dept. of Health/Project ASSIST. FREE. Registration deadline April 29--call Kathy E. Smith at 222-3293.  "The strategic use of media is a powerful and high-leverage tool.  The primary goal of this session is to help the tobacco advocate gain an understanding of how to do media advoacy to enhance policy advocacy.  Media advocacy empowers communities to conduct their own media and public relations." A light dinner will be served.

WEDNESDAY, MAY 19, 1999 - "BREAK THE CHAIN" -3:30 p.m. Rally at State House, Providence.  Sponsored by Coalition on Smoking OR Health. To recognize those harmed by tobacco, while calling for resources to break the chain of future addiction, disease and health care costs.  Chain of hospital bracelets will be carried from the R.I. Medical Society to the State House.  Each bracelet will carry the name of someone harmed by tobacco. For more information call Art Handy at 728-5300.

September 21-22, 1999  A Matter of Life and Breath: Collaborating for Success - New England and Eastern Canada Tobacco Control Conference  Sheraton Four Points Hotel, Hyannis, MA.  For information contact University of Massachusetts Donahue Institute (617) 367-8901.  Purpose of the conference: collective planning among New England States and Eastern Canada, sharing best practices, learning to implement state-of-the-art tobacco control programs, coordinating advocacy efforts, improving interaction and collaboration between governmental and nongovernmental organizations.

Wednesday, September 29, 1999 - Y 2 QUIT - 7 p.m. - CCRI Warwick Campus.  Smoking cessation program sponsored by Providence Journal.  Featuring exhibits, and presentation by Dr. Victor DeNoble, a former researcher for Philip Morris Tobacco Company and one of the first "whistle blowers" against the tobacco industry. DeNoble was recruited in the 1980s by Philip Morris to study the physiologic effects of nicotine and design a "safer" cigarette. He will discuss his secret research on nicotine addiction conducted before he was fired by Philip Morris. The researcher was a key witness in the federal government's case against the tobacco industry and he has testified before Congress, the FDA, and Vice President Al Gore's Tobacco Settlement Committee.

Friday, November 5, 1999  "The Insider" movie opens.  The story of Jeffrey Wigand, whistleblower who formerly worked for Brown & Williamson Tobacco company, and the killing of the "60 Minutes" story about him by Big Tobacco pressure.  ("R" rating reflects only the language (mostly the "f--" word), no actual violence or sex, but lots of tension.)
