RI MUNICPAL ORDINANCES

RELATING TO TOBACCO

This is a summary of ordinances in place in Rhode Island communities. The list is subject to change at any time as ordinances are amended or added. Please notify the Tobacco Control Network at 421-6487 of any inaccuracies in this list and of changes as they occur.

Barrington Tobacco use prohibited during youth events at athletic or recreational facilities owned or leased by the municipality.
Bristol Tobacco use prohibited during youth events at recreational or athletic facilities owned or leased by the municipality.
Coventry Tobacco use prohibited during youth events at athletic or recreational facilities owned or leased by the municipality. Tobacco use prohibited in all buildings owned or leased by the town.
Cranston Tobacco use prohibited in all buildings owned or leased by the city.
East Providence Locking device required on vending machines; no sale of cigarette rolling papers to anyone under the age of 18.
Jamestown Tobacco use prohibited at the Jamestown Community Playground.  [Click here to read the ordinance]
Lincoln Tobacco use prohibited in town owned buildings.
Middletown No sale of tobacco products to children under the age of 18; locking devices required on vending machines; no sale of cigarettes in packages less than 20.
Newport Tobacco use prohibited within 100 feet of athletic or recreational facilities owned by the city.
North Providence Tobacco use prohibited in public recreational areas and within 15 feet of bleachers/dugouts of athletic facilities/areas.
North Smithfield Smoking prohibited in school buildings/on school grounds; municipal buildings and on municipal grounds except in designated area; recreational buildings and grounds.
Portsmouth Tobacco use prohibited during youth events in recreational/athletic facilities owned by the town.
Smithfield Tobacco use prohibited in all municipal buildings except the Police Department.
Warren Tobacco use prohibited at any Town Council meeting.
West Warwick Tobacco use prohibited in any vehicle or building owned, rented, or leased by the town; prohibited in any departments, boards, commissions, semi-autonomous bodies, or agencies of the town; prohibited on public streets or sidewalks adjacent or next to a gasoline station; prohibited on public streets by anyone under the age of 18.   [Click here to read the ordinance]
